ANNE-MARIE WOODS
Anne-Marie Woods aka Amani (The Contemporary Blues Poet) is an actor, writer, producer, spoken word artist and a creative consultant based in Toronto, Ontario. She has been a professional performance artist for over 20 years and has been a leader in arts outreach and arts educaiton for many years. She has a speaker series called "Artivationally Speaking" where she uses poetry, rap, music and storytelling to deal with hard hitting issues that affect youth. She has been performing spoken word since 1996, and released her first CD "Amani, the Words, the Rhythm, the Music in September of 2007 to rave reviews, and her CD is now a part Canadian history as part of the Canadian Archives in Ottawa. This dynamic diva was the headline poet at the World Famous Nuyorican Cafe, in New York City in 2006, in 2007 she headlined in London at the Word Power International Black Literary Expo and she was the featured artist at The Drum in Birmingham England, she has been a featured poet in When Sisters Speak, the Jazz by Genre Series, Afrofest, and When Words are spoken here in Toronto. Amani's poetic style is very versatile, from spewing hard core hip hop sounding lyrics one moment, to singing poetry the next to the Caribbean Flava in her pieces, you will be moved by her lyrics. In May of this year she was the featured International performer at the 19th Annual Rapso Fest in Trinidad, as part of the Women of de Oral Tradition Showcase. As a writer her autobiography has been published in the Women's Anthology "And I Will Paint The Sky", she writes a monthly column called "On My Mind" for afrotoronto.com. and continues to create pieces for organizations and individuals across the country.
Her love for creativity and performing was nurtured in Halifax, Nova Scotia where from 1986 - 2000 she was involved in arts outreach in the various cultural communities and she sang with Acapella Sensation "Four the Moment". She is currently working on releasing the Amani Live DVD concert performance, and hopes to write her first poetry book in 2009.
As an actor/performer she is phenomenal, as a producer she is sensational, this modern day Renaissance woman has found a way to fuse her artistry and business and is well on her way to being a true Canadian success story.
